He was born in Pacho, Cundinamarca, the son of farmers who sold cheese. He died at 42 as one of the richest men in the world, cornered by two gunships in a banana plantation on the Colombian Caribbean coast. Between those two moments, Gonzalo Rodríguez Gacha—"El Mexicano"—built one of the most devastating criminal empires Latin America has ever produced. A co-founder of the Medellín Cartel along with Pablo Escobar, the Ochoa brothers, and Carlos Lehder, he was the military architect of an organization that exported tons of cocaine to the United States and waged open war against the Colombian state. Forbes ranked him among the richest men on the planet. His earnings were estimated at $230,000 per minute. He owned more than 116 properties, including ranches with Mexican names, a thoroughbred horse with its own veterinarian, and an army of 2,000 hitmen trained by Israeli and British mercenaries. He was a pioneer of paramilitarism in Colombia, a financier of the Patriotic Union genocide, and responsible for the assassinations of Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, Guillermo Cano, Carlos Mauro Hoyos, and Luis Carlos Galán. He ordered the bombing of an Avianca commercial airliner with 107 people on board and a 500-kilogram car bomb targeting the DAS headquarters in Bogotá. He was brought down by the person he least expected: his own trusted confidant. On December 15, 1989, Operation Apocalypse cornered him between Coveñas and Tolú. He fled in a red truck, crossed grasslands armed with an R-15 rifle and grenades, and died alongside his 17-year-old son, Freddy, from a 7.62 caliber bullet. His funeral in Pacho was attended by a massive crowd.
