Summary: After the brook that sustained him dries up, Elijah doesn't choose his own destiny; God sends him to Zarephath, to the house of a poor widow. At the city gate, the divine command clashes with a visible need: the widow gathers wood to prepare one last meal for herself and her son. Elijah asks her for water and then a piece of bread; she confesses that there is only a handful of flour and a little oil left, enough for one last loaf of bread. Elijah tells her not to be afraid and instructs her to bake bread for him first, promising that the Lord will provide for them until the drought ends. She obeys, and the jar of flour and the jug of oil do not run out; Elijah, the widow, and her household eat for many days. Later, a greater trial comes: the widow's son falls ill and dies; in her grief, she reproaches Elijah and God. Elijah takes the boy, goes upstairs, prays, and stretches himself out over him three times; the Lord hears Elijah's prayer, and the boy comes back to life. Seeing her son alive, the widow understands that the continuous provision was a sign of God's power to give life and care for his people. Reflection: Obedience in times of scarcity opens the door for God to show his faithfulness, turning what seems like the end into the beginning of his work.
