New York State pauses new hyperscale data centers for up to a year under Hochul order

New York State has placed a moratorium on new hyperscale data centers. Governor Kathy Hochul signed the executive order imposing a moratorium on Tuesday morning, following months of concerns from communities about the negative impacts of data centers. The moratorium will pause the development of new hyperscale data centers for up to one year. Governor Hochul said this will allow the state to "take its time" establishing a regulatory framework that protects the environment, ratepayers and the energy grid. She emphasized that she wants to ensure that New York State would be the first in the union to build them the "right way."
