San Miguel de Allende is one of the outstanding destinations in Mexico due to its architecture and history, each year it is one of the most visited places in the state of Guanajuato. The city was founded in 1542 by the Franciscan monk Fray Juan de San Miguel, who baptized the settlement as San Miguel el Grande. It was an important crossing point of the Old Royal Road, part of the silver route that connected with Zacatecas. In 1900, San Miguel de Allende was on the verge of becoming a ghost town. Already in 1926 it was declared a historic monument by the Mexican Government, so since then the development in the Historic Center is restricted to preserve the colonial character of the town.
