Construction of standard gauge railway to begin next month

Construction of the long-awaited Standard Gauge Railway begins next month without fail. Works and Transport Minister Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala has already briefed Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja on the project’s progress. The government awarded the contract to Turkish firm Mackenzie, currently building a similar railway from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza in Tanzania. According to Finance Ministry official Moses Kaggwa, funding has been secured from development partners, with €2.7 million allocated for the four-year project. Land acquisition is complete, with 1,600 acres compensated.
