Sampling oud oils and animalics - Fragrance Updates ep19

Today’s Fragrance Updates is a very special one. No rankings, no first impressions, no structured topic — just me and Luke diving headfirst into the fascinating world of real oud. Together, we explore an incredible selection of pure oud oils generously sent over by Areej Le Doré and Russian Adam himself. Smoky, medicinal, animalic, fruity, leathery, spiritual — this was one of the most eye-opening fragrance experiences I’ve ever had. But it doesn’t stop there. Alongside the ouds, we also get to smell real diluted animalic materials rarely encountered in modern perfumery: castoreum, civet, ambergris, and deer musk. Raw, strange, beautiful, challenging… and essential to understanding the history and emotional depth of fragrance. To tie everything together, we also sample two fragrances from the house and reflect on how these raw materials translate into wearable perfumery. This episode is less of a review and more of a journey — a candid, unscripted exploration into the deeper side of perfumery with one of my closest fragrance friends.
