It is the direct sequel to Super Mario Galaxy from 2007 and builds upon its gameplay mechanics and aesthetics, but expands upon them with numerous new ideas and tells an alternate story, independent of the first game. The basic premise involves guiding Mario through a multitude of galaxies, designed as small, self-contained worlds whose gravity mechanics allow free movement across spheres, platforms, and unusually shaped planets. A particularly distinctive feature of Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the return of Mario's enemy-eating dinosaur companion, Yoshi, who gained new abilities in various levels by eating specific fruits. The red Yoshi is especially fast, the blue one can float like a balloon, and the yellow one illuminates dark areas. The variety of power-ups was also expanded, including the Cloud Mario and Rock Mario transformations. The game's development wasn't originally planned as a standalone project. After completing Super Mario Galaxy, Nintendo began designing additional levels for the first game, but their sheer number and creativity soon exceeded the scope of a simple expansion pack. This ultimately led to the creation of a full-fledged sequel. Under the direction of Yoshiaki Koizumi and Shigeru Miyamoto, the development team focused heavily on experimental level design, which hadn't been included in the first installment. At the same time, the user interface was streamlined, for example, with a classic world map reminiscent of the older 2D Mario games, to simplify navigation between galaxies. Furthermore, our hero travels in a Mario spaceship belonging to the purple Luma Lubba, searching for Power Stars, which provide fuel and can be found in individual missions. The game received outstanding reviews worldwide, averaging 97%, and is still considered one of the best platformers ever made. The creative level design, the variety of gameplay mechanics, and the technical execution, which offered a visually stunning experience despite the Wii's limited hardware capabilities, were particularly praised. The orchestral score, which, as with its predecessor, created an epic atmosphere, also contributed significantly to the positive impression. Commercially, the game was also very successful with 7.41 million sales, though it fell short of the first installment.
