George West is the first of five Class 3A teams to beat No. 2 ranked Class 2A Bobcats this season. In 1985, when the two teams last met, Refugio won 41-0. The Bobcats got the lone score of the first half on a 28-yard run by Toya Jones with 1:44 left in the first quarter. The extra point kick failed. Then, after the first third-quarter interception, Longhorn Trey Zuniga ran 5 yards for the score and lee Alaniz ran in the two point conversion to put George West ahead 8-6. But Refugio struck back when John Kelley scored on a 1-yard touchdown run, and Brent Thomas added a two-point conversion run for a 14-8 lead. With 42 seconds left in the quarter, another Longhorn interception set up Trey Moffitt’s 13-yard touchdown run. Zuniga kicked the extra point to give George West the 15-14 victory. Refugio’s Kelley was the leading rusher with 101 yards on 11 carries. Zuniga paced the Longhorns with 66 yards on 11 carries.
