Cours onduleur | Partie 3

An inverter is a power electronics device that generates alternating voltages and currents from a direct current (DC) power source. Its operation differs from other converters such as AC/AC converters, AC/DC rectifiers, and DC/DC converters. However, an inverter can be combined with other converters to change their function. The English name for inverter, 'inverter', comes from the fact that historically, the inverter performed the inverse function of a rectifier.
