The Once and Future Kingdom of Münster

In 1534, a group of radical Anabaptists seized the German city of Münster and declared it the New Jerusalem, the site where Christ would return and the world would end. What followed was one of the strangest, most violent episodes of the entire Reformation: mass rebaptisms, prophets in the streets, the abolition of private property, forced polygamy, and a self-proclaimed king ruling from the ruins of a cathedral city under siege. From the preaching of Bernhard Rothmann, to the prophecies of Melchior Hoffman, to the reign of Jan Matthys and Jan van Leiden, Münster became the nightmare that would haunt the Anabaptist name for centuries, and hand their enemies all the proof they thought they needed.
