The history of Reading, a town in Berkshire, England, spans over a thousand years. Founded in the 8th century, it grew around the confluence of the Rivers Thames and Kennet. In medieval times, Reading Abbey, established by King Henry I in 1121, made the town a major religious and economic center. During the English Civil War, Reading was heavily fortified and suffered sieges. The Industrial Revolution brought prosperity through brewing, ironworks, and the famous Huntley & Palmers biscuit factory. In the 20th century, Reading expanded rapidly, becoming a commercial and educational hub. Today, it blends rich heritage with modern urban development.
