Please share with your friends. Gosport is a historic naval town on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour in Hampshire. Although it is often overshadowed by its larger neighbour, Portsmouth, Gosport has a fascinating history stretching back over 800 years. Its fortunes have been closely tied to the Royal Navy, and almost every street, fort and waterfront building tells part of Britain's maritime story. The town developed rapidly from the 17th century onwards as Portsmouth Harbour became one of the Royal Navy's most important bases. Gosport became home to naval hospitals, barracks, ordnance depots, victualling yards and defensive fortifications. During both World Wars, thousands of sailors, engineers and dockyard workers lived and worked here. Gosport Museum and Art Gallery The centrepiece of the town's cultural life today is Gosport Museum and Art Gallery. Rather than being simply a collection of old objects, it was redeveloped to tell the story of Gosport through the people who lived there. Following a £1.4 million refurbishment, it reopened in late 2022 as a modern museum and gallery combining history, art, education and community spaces. The building itself One of the museum's greatest exhibits is the building. It was originally built around 1901 as a public library and technical institute, designed by architect A. W. S. Cross. Around 1908 it became Gosport Grammar School before later serving as the town museum and library. It is now a Grade II listed building because of its architectural importance. Thanks for watching.
