We Entered the Russian Swamps in Search of Our Missing Soldiers

Twenty-one volunteers from Latvia set out for the Volkhov Swamps — one of the most dangerous and mysterious places connected to the history of the Second World War. Somewhere among these forests and swamps lies a massive German military burial site. According to archival records, the remains of between 500 and 700 soldiers may still rest there. But before us, looters had already been there. They were not searching for fallen soldiers. They were searching for gold, rings, medals, and anything else that could still be sold. We had no idea what was waiting for us ahead. We had no idea how difficult it would be to reach our destination. And we certainly did not realize that this expedition would become the most challenging mission in the history of our organization.
