Using an MPC as a Looper
Roger Linn talks about using the MPC as the ultimate looper, including doing things that even DAWs can't do. Oops— at 3:04, I said “In fact, I have yet to find any function on the MPC that DOESN’t stop play.” I meant to say “I have yet to find any function on the MPC that DOES stop play.” Thanks to those who shared the view that Ableton Live can do the same thing I state in the video. I should have been clearer. Live is a superb tool that I’ve enjoyed using many times but like all DAWs, its project file contains a single multi-track sequence, whereas an MPC project file contains 16 multi-track sequences, a feature that was an essential element of my original MPC design. It’s true that Live’s session view permits similar flexibility in Session view by selecting single-track clips or scenes of these clips. However, it’s also true, for example, that all clips in a given MIDI track must use the same assigned synth, mix, and other settings. I prefer the increased flexibility of the MPC’s real-time recording and arranging of its 16 fully independent multi-track sequences.
