Putin, Xi, and Kim are More Fragile Than You Think

What makes dictatorships survive, and why do tyrants suddenly fall? In this video, I'm joined by political scientist and author Dr Marcel Dirsus to explore the mechanics of authoritarian rule, the fragility of illiberal regimes, and the forces that remove dictators from power. Drawing on examples from North Korea, Russia, China, Syria and Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, we analyse the military coups, revolutions, assassinations, rebellions and mass protests that have proved turning points in the regimes of autocrats, and consider the famous “3.5 per cent rule” associated with non-violent resistance movements against authoritarian governments around the world. In particular, we dive deep to consider both the capacities for survival and vulnerabilities of leaders such as Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and Kim Jong-un, while considering democratic backsliding, the limits of Liberal Democracy and growing concerns about the creep of authoritarianism in the United States and Europe. Dr Dirsus explains the “dictator’s treadmill”, why tyrants struggle to relinquish power, and how the loyalty of a dictatorship's elites, surveillance, repression and regime collapse shape modern politics.
