I Found an Invasive Carp in the River Barrow… Here’s What Happened
While fishing on the River Barrow in Ireland, I made a surprising discovery — a non-native carp in an Irish river system. Carp are not native to Ireland’s wild river ecosystems, and their presence can raise serious concerns about invasive species, biodiversity loss, and the health of Irish freshwater habitats. In this video, I share the full story of how I found the carp, why it shouldn’t have been there, and how I contacted Inland Fisheries Ireland to report the issue. Inland Fisheries Ireland responded and removed the fish for further investigation. But what does this mean for the River Barrow? Could carp establish themselves in Irish rivers? And what impact could invasive fish species have on native Irish fish populations like trout and salmon? In this video, I discuss: • Carp in Ireland and their legal status • Invasive species in Irish rivers • The ecological impact of non-native fish • Protecting biodiversity in Ireland • What anglers should do if they find invasive fish Invasive species are one of the biggest threats to freshwater ecosystems worldwide, and Ireland’s rivers are no exception. If you fish in Ireland or care about conservation, this is an important conversation. If you’ve ever spotted unusual fish in Irish waters, report it to Inland Fisheries Ireland.
