After a period of relative calm surrounding the dispute, Trump has now doubled down at the summit in Ankara. US President Donald Trump is sticking to his territorial claims to Greenland, which belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark. He insisted that the world's largest island should be controlled by the United States, not Denmark, he said at the NATO summit in Ankara during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. However, he did not threaten any concrete action. Instead, he once again launched into a now-familiar criticism of Europe. "We could pull all our troops out of Europe," he threatened hypothetically. The high-ranking government official pointed out that there is “heavy naval activity” in the region around Greenland and that US President Donald Trump is seeking a “permanent” solution. “So far, we see the acquisition of Greenland by the United States as the only solution,” the official continued. Trump's blatant territorial claims shocked NATO partners At the beginning of the year, Trump openly threatened to seize the strategically important Arctic island of Greenland – thereby not only offending NATO partner Denmark but also raising doubts about the unity of the world's largest military alliance and the mutual commitment of its members. His reasoning: The territory, which belongs to Denmark, would otherwise not be safe from Russia and China – and therefore neither would the USA. While Trump ultimately retracted his threats to use military force if necessary – as well as his announcement of punitive tariffs against Germany and other European countries should they not agree to sell the island to the USA – he maintained his claim to the island.
