Nutmeg: How a Cozy Holiday Spice Sparked Wars, Massacres, and the Trade of Manhattan
Nutmeg — the cozy holiday spice hiding in your kitchen drawer — was once worth more than gold, and people killed for it. For centuries, the entire world's supply came from the Banda Islands, a tiny cluster of volcanic specks in the Indonesian sea that most people couldn't find on a map. Arab and Malay traders guarded the source like a state secret, disguising routes and blurring origins to keep rivals out. When European powers finally cracked the code, the spice trade turned into a war. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) launched one of history's most brutal colonial campaigns to seize control of nutmeg. In 1621, Jan Pieterszoon Coen arrived with warships and soldiers — and within months, a population of 12,000 Bandanese had been reduced to fewer than 2,000. The survivors were enslaved to work the very groves their ancestors had tended for generations. And then came the deal of the century — or rather, the worst trade in history. In the 1667 Treaty of Breda, the Dutch swapped the tiny nutmeg island of Run for a muddy outpost called Manhattan. They thought they'd won. We know how that turned out. This video traces the full arc: from Banda's volcanic slopes and ancient harvest rituals, to plague-era Europe's nutmeg obsession, to the French spy who smuggled seedlings out and shattered the Dutch monopoly forever.
