Blue Whales: Giants of a Warming Ocean
Blue whales are the largest animals to ever live on Earth, yet their future remains uncertain. This film is a reflection on wonder, loss, resilience, and what it means to spend a life in the presence of giants. After being nearly erased by industrial whaling, blue whales are still here, moving through a changing ocean and relying on fragile pockets of productivity to survive. In 2024, more than a hundred blue whales arrived off the coast of San Diego after an unusually warm El Niño winter. Many were thin, searching for food, and dependent on a remarkable krill bloom that briefly transformed our local waters into a lifeline. But protection does not mean safety. Ship strikes, warming oceans, shifting food sources, and human-driven change continue to shape the future of blue whales. This video is about the beauty of seeing them, the sadness of knowing what has been lost, and the hope that future generations will still know a world where blue whales roam our oceans.
