He has conducted four large-scale field measurements over the past twenty years, determining the efficiency of over 300 heat pumps in various buildings. Around half of these, or 150 heat pumps, were located in existing buildings. The results are impressive: In the existing buildings, many of which have not been renovated and have conventional radiators, air-to-water heat pumps achieved an average annual performance factor of 3.1. This means they produced an average of over three kilowatt-hours of heat from one kilowatt-hour of electricity.
