A Charlie Brown Christmas [Complete TV Soundtrack v2] - Vince Guaraldi Trio (1965,66)
Original Score by Vince Guaraldi Trio (*) Original Broadcast December 9, 1965, 1966 Featuring Fred Marshall (Double Bass), Jerry Granelli (Drums), Monty Budwig (Bass), Colin Bailey (Drums). "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord." _______________________________ SYNOPSIS Charlie Brown, depressed by the commercialism of Christmas and because he doesn't get any Christmas cards, becomes the director of the gang's Christmas pageant. Can he overcome his gang's preference for dancing instead of acting, find a good Christmas tree, and the true meaning of Christmas? _______________________________ THIS SOUNDTRACK Here's a perennial favorite, A Charlie Brown Christmas [Complete TV Soundtrack v2]. The soundtrack was composed by jazz piano impresario genius Vince Guaraldi, along with Fred Marshall on double bass and the great Jerry Granelli on drums. This complete soundtrack contains all of the Vince Guaraldi songs, including "Surfing Snoopy" , "Charlie Brown Theme" and "Fredia". "Christmas Time Is Here" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" was sung by a choir of children culled from St. Paul's Episcopal Church in San Rafael. *UPDATE Version 2 has a new source; none of these come from the "Fantasy" album nor any related. This new soundtrack now mimics the original 1966 broadcast. I've chosen to recreate the 1966 version instead of the 1965 version due to the changes made by Bill Melendez and Lee Mendelson. The 1966 version appears to be the most complete with all of the songs played as they are today. (See "Differences" below) All of the songs now exactly match the broadcast version: "01. Christmas Time Is Here (tv version)" - Has complete fadeout with Linus crashing into the "CocaCola" sign! "30. Hark, the Herald Angels Sing (singing)" - Contains the song ending. All of the other song (clips) are represented as well. You may notice that the sound quality is a bit lacking on the high frequency end on most tracks. And on certain songs there is an abundance of Tape hiss prevalent as well. This is due to the original sound mix that was thrown together back in 1965. _______________________________ DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 1965 and 1966 VERSIONS After finding a complete Broadcast version of the original 1965 classic, I found some interesting differences compared to the 1966 (Present) version; here's a just a few. When Snoopy is installing lights on his doghouse, "Christmastime is Here (instr.) is played instead of "Surfin Snoopy". Also in that scene when Charlie says "Lights and Display contest", it is overdubbed by another actor. When Charlie is introduced as a Director, no music is played. When Lucy hands out the parts to the gang (including Linus), no music is played. When Freida complains about Pigpen's dust, no music is played. Also, when Lucy is kissed by a dog, Snoopy goes "BLAH" on screen, but nothing is heard. When Sally is introduced as Linus's wife, no music is played. "Surfing Snoopy" and "Charlie Brown Theme" are not in the 1965 film at all. Apparently after the 1965 version was aired, Bill Melendez and Lee Mendelson went back to the studio and tweaked the soundtrack, adding a few more Vince Guaraldi tunes. The 1966 version (this version) should be considered the definitive version since it contains all of the music! Enjoy! _______________________________ YOUTUBE TRACKLIST 00:00 01 Christmas Time Is Here (tv version) - St. Paul's Episcopal Church choir (02 : 25) 02:06 .. brought to you by Coca-Cola 02:25 02 Christmas Time Is Here instrumental (01 : 04) 03:30 03 Skating (00 : 52) 04:22 04 Christmas Time Is Here2 (01 : 39) 06:02 05 Surfin Snoopy (00 : 40) 06:42 06 Christmas Time Is Here3 (00 : 57) 07:40 07 Christmas Is Coming (00 : 17) 07:57 08 Charlie Brown Theme (00 : 30) 08:27 09 Linus and Lucy (00 : 46) 09:14 10 Charlie Brown Theme2 (00 : 35) 09:50 11 Charlie Brown Theme3 (00 : 58) 10:48 12 Linus and Lucy2 (00 : 07) 10:55 13 Freida with the Naturally Curly Hair (00 : 42) 11:38 14 Happiness Is (00 : 16) 11:54 15 Charlie Brown Theme4 (00 : 37) 12:32 16 Linus and Lucy3 (00 : 14) 12:47 17 Linus and Lucy4 (00 : 10) 12:57 18 Oh Tannenbaum (00 : 57) 13:55 19 Fur Elise (00 : 19) 14:15 20 Linus and Lucy5 2nd break (00 : 25) 14:41 21 Fur Elise2 (00 : 06) 14:47 22 Jingle Bells1 piano (00 : 09) 14:57 23 Jingle Bells2 organ (00 : 05) 15:02 24 Jingle Bells3 toy piano (00 : 09) 15:11 25 Christmas Time Is Here4 (00 : 40) 15:52 26 Oh Tannenbaum2 (01 : 22) 17:15 27 Oh Tannenbaum3 (00 : 24) 17:39 28 Oh Tannenbaum4 (00 : 40) 18:19 29 Hark The Herald Angels Sing humming (00 : 21) 18:40 30 Hark The Herald Angels Sing singing - St. Paul's Episcopal Church choir (00 : 47) 19:27 END _______________________________ (*)ABOUT THE TRIO The first 11 tracks of the original LP -- were credited to Marshall and Granelli.
