Celebrating the 35th anniversary of Michigan Death Fest I (August 11, 1990). Hopefully we’ve all learned some lessons lol. Rich Bush (RIP 2022) and I (Bryan Durren) from ZPOG were two of the co-creators, along with “Metal Mom” Sandy Newton, who booked and promoted the show, and Jeff Cooch from Epitaph magazine, who helped with promoting and advertising. In 1990, Rich and I had just finished the first issue of our death metal zine, Rot, and ZPOG was about to record our first tape, God’s Vomit. On somewhat-of-a-roll and feeling audacious, we concocted an all-day death metal fest with the national/local bands that we wanted to see (Morbid Angel, Sacrifice, Nuclear Death, Deceased, et al) and named it Michigan Death Fest, naturally! It would be one of the first death metal festivals in the Midwest, and a full 13 years before the massive Maryland Deathfest. To say people weren’t ready for it is an understatement. Hey, we didn’t know it would be on Jackson for Jesus Day, but whatcha gonna do? Thankfully Rich and I had connected with a fearless promoter in Sandy. She got sh_t done, and didn’t back down from the satanic panic that was about to ensue. I drew the logo and artwork for the poster and when that thing went up? Ka-Boom!!!
