In this video, we discuss the current changes to the Weapons Act, which the Bundestag passed on October 18, 2024, and which primarily affect the carrying of knives in certain public areas. New weapons-free zones and expanded police control powers are intended to increase safety in public spaces. We explain what Sections 42 and 42b of the Weapons Act mean for knife owners and what the so-called "non-accessible" transport entails. Furthermore, the handling of switchblades will be prohibited in the future. __________________________________________________________________________ German Weapons Law (Waffengesetz, abbreviated: WaffG) regulates the handling of weapons and other dangerous objects. Regarding knives, there are various regulations that can vary depending on the type of knife and its intended use, as well as the location where you carry the knife. In principle, the possession of knives is permitted in Germany. However, there are certain types of knives that are considered more dangerous than others and are therefore subject to the Weapons Act. These include, among others, one-handed lockable knives or fixed-blade knives with a blade length of more than 12 cm, as well as all automatic knives and throwing knives. Knives considered weapons (e.g., hand knives) are subject to a permit. To obtain such a permit, certain requirements must be met, such as a legitimate interest in acquiring the knife. This includes, for example, hunters or sport shooters who need the knife for their sport or activity. Tradition, professional practice, sports, film or video recordings, or theater productions also serve as a legitimate interest. However, there is no age restriction or special permit requirement for the general possession of knives. However, carrying certain knives may be prohibited in certain situations. For example, on public transport, at its stops, schools, or courthouses. Carrying knives in public is also regulated by law, such as at events. Knives such as butterfly knives and switchblades are also generally prohibited. This quickly raises the question: "What types of knives can you legally carry, which are prohibited, and which are permitted?" Knives that are not restricted by Section 42a of the German Weapons Act can almost always be carried freely. Violations of the Weapons Act can result in severe penalties, including several years' imprisonment. Therefore, it is important to familiarize yourself with the applicable regulations regarding the handling of knives in Germany and to comply with them.
