But do not look only at the bell, either.” “That is difficult.” “That is why bridges have keepers.” At the middle of the bridge, something moved beyond the mist. “What was that sound?” “A moonbird. It is waiting for you.” “But I have not reached the far shore yet.” “Then call it.” The traveler took out the silver bell and rang it softly. Chirin. A white moonbird descended quietly from the fog. “You came…” The traveler gently offered the bell. “I am sorry I was late.” The moonbird gave a soft cry, as if answering him. The keeper’s voice returned. “It has reached the one waiting.” “But I have not finished crossing the bridge.” “Reaching the far shore is not the only thing that matters. The traveler crossed the rest of the bridge with the moonbird. When he reached the far shore, he looked back. The keeper was still standing there. “Can I cross this bridge again?” “If you have a destination. And if you get lost, stop and look at the light.” The traveler bowed deeply. “Thank you. Without your light, I could not have crossed.” “The light only showed the road. Your own feet crossed the bridge.” As dawn approached, the mist bridge slowly faded.
