Construction started in the 1960s and the dam was officially completed in 1968. The dam was created to help generate hydro-electric power for Tasmania using the fast-flowing waters of the Forth River. It works together with nearby power stations and other dams in the region to supply renewable electricity across the state. One of the most incredible things about Devils Gate Dam is its design. It is known as one of the thinnest double-curvature concrete arch dams in the world. Instead of relying only on its weight, the curved design pushes the pressure of the water into the surrounding rock walls, making it extremely strong and efficient. The dam stands about 84 metres high and holds back the waters of Lake Barrington, which is now famous for: Fishing 🎣 Rowing and kayaking 🚣 Camping and sightseeing 🌲 Wildlife and nature photography 📸 The name “Devils Gate” comes from the narrow rocky gorge where the dam was built. Before the dam existed, the gorge was known for powerful rushing water and rugged cliffs. Today the lookout is a popular stop for tourists exploring North West Tasmania, especially people visiting nearby Lake Barrington and Sheffield. It’s also a great filming location for outdoor adventure and fishing content like Catch Me Fish Now.
