How Chris McCandless Got Trapped and Lost in the Alaskan Wilderness
September 6, 1992—deep in the Alaskan wilderness. A hunter stumbles upon an old, rusting bus. He pushes open the door, expecting shelter for the night. Instead, the stench of decay hits him like a wall. At the back of the bus, something is inside a sleeping bag. A lump. Unmoving. He radios for help. By the time state troopers arrive the next day, the truth is undeniable… Inside that bag are the decomposed remains of a wilderness adventurer named Christopher McCandless. However, just four months earlier, McCandless—calling himself “Alexander Supertramp”—walked into the wild, alone. No map. No real plan. Just a rifle, some rice, and a handful of books by Thoreau, London, and Tolstoy. Not only was he running away from society, but he was also chasing something. Freedom? Purpose? Or was it something darker? Whatever he sought, he never walked back out. Starvation, isolation, and brutal reality took their toll. But here’s the real question: Was McCandless a fearless adventurer, a reckless dreamer, or something in between? And why did he never make it out the Alaskan wilderness? My name is Sam, and this is Wild America. Let’s find out. ———————————————————————————————————————————————— All materials in these videos are used for educational purposes and fall within the guidelines of fair use.
