With an afternoon in sunny Mosul, Iraq ahead of me, my friends and I set out to have some lunch and explore a local castle and bazaar. LUNCH: At a restaurant set within an old, traditional home, we had dolmas (which also included tomatoes stuffed with rice), a beef soup, boiled Kubba Mosul, and fried Kubba Mosul, with fresh parsley, cucumbers, and tomatoes. BASHTABYA CASTLE: After lunch, we explored this 1,200-year-old ruined castle along the Tigris River. The ruins are tricky to navigate and a bit dangerous, as you have to climb up steep ruins and jump across gaps in the walls in order to explore the whole thing. BAZAAR: At the local bazaar, we saw vendors selling everything from fruits and vegetables to freshly pressed tahini. I tried some fresh tahini, sha’riyya (pistachio halwa), Numi Al-Basrah (fresh lime juice), Naqe’e Al Habib (raisin juice), and mann al-sama (flour-coated nougat). We also met vendors selling coffee and tea pots, as well as another selling coffee and spices from all over the world! Where have you been?
