The topic of forest restoration is often a topic of public debate, and we believe this video is a vital and necessary contribution to that conversation. People love planting trees and often perceive it as an intrinsic benefit, benefiting both nature and future generations. Many are happy to volunteer for such events. But in reality, benefits are far from always realized. If the organizers of such tree plantings approach the task without due consideration, or plant for the sake of a plan and a pretty report card, then forest planting can even cause significant harm. This approach, which prioritizes only the process of planting trees, without considering the cost to society and nature, is what we call "tree planting madness." In this video, we look at an example of tree planting madness in the Irkutsk region, near Lake Baikal. We really want to see as little tree planting madness as possible, and ideally, none at all. And so that people who participate in tree planting with the best of intentions avoid such events. And also, so that such plantings do not become the main focus of future forest climate projects.
