Malabar Whistling Thrush: The Whistling Schoolboy of the Ghats. Dawn in the Western Ghats. Before the sun touches the canopy, before the first chai boils, a clear, human-like whistle cuts through the mist. Not a bird call, but a tune. Like a boy practicing scales on his way to school. Deep blue-black feathers that shine cobalt on his forehead and shoulders when the light hits. When the monsoon comes, he sings loudest. June rain on teak leaves, and his whistle rises above it. Part flute, part ghost. Locals say if you hear him at dusk, rain will follow by morning. You won’t see him in cities. Only where streams still run clean and forests still stand damp. Endemic. Ancient. Belonging only to these hills from Maharashtra to Kerala.
