On the way, he is ambushed by two brothers who mistake him for a bounty hunter. He is forced to shoot one of them, and he captures the other, Joe Conners, and brings him to town. His prisoner professes his innocence in the crime for which the entire town wants him hanged. Will Andrews believe him after hearing his story? Review: They manage to breathe new life into a familiar idea. Aside from a cheesy intro and outro, this is a pretty good Western, even if the main theme is somewhat familiar. After all, there must have been a thousand Westerns where a big, bad boss rules a town and everything goes his way... until he encounters an honest man who can neither be intimidated nor bought. Fortunately, however, there are enough new elements in this familiar story to make it worth watching. The film begins with Dana Andrews encountering two men on the run from the law in a nearby town. They assume Andrews is after them and open fire. Andrews kills one man and captures the other. Strangely, they thought he was after them, but he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. So he takes the sole survivor to a nearby town to stand trial, but it quickly becomes clear that the town has no interest in a trial—they want to hang the man! Andrews, of course, isn't about to let that happen and persuades the very reluctant sheriff (Lon Chaney Jr.) to help. There are far too many inconsistencies he needs to clear up, but no one in town seems willing to talk—everyone just wants the man hanged, and the town's wealthy boss seems to be behind it all. Good acting, good direction, and some nice plot twists make this film worth watching. Not a great film, but a very good one. And, like a typical A.C. Lyles production of the 1960s, it employs actors whose careers have seen better days—and uses them to good effect.
