From the 1980s to the 1990s, world-class wave contests were frequently held at Hookipa Beach on Maui, Hawaii, and were often seen on television. She stood out even among the top riders from around the world, always maintaining a single-digit ranking, and is a legend and a reliable presence for us Japanese windsurfing enthusiasts. And above all, her graceful riding, from deep bottom turns to daring vertical attacks on the lip, made her appear even more impressive despite her small stature, captivating us who watched. As a pioneering figure among Japanese wave riders at the time, she has since been active in training younger generations. Currently based in Maui, her passion remains undiminished, and she continues to challenge herself in a variety of exciting sports. Her stoic lifestyle and unwavering dedication are her source of energy, and I believe that this dedication is her unique way of life. This may also be possible because of the riding sensibility she cultivated through windsurfing. She says! Kitesurfing is freedom itself! That's why every day is so much fun! Like windsurfing, kitesurfing also flakeged from Europe and is now beginning to spread throughout the world. Indeed, when I first saw the movements of kitesurfing, I felt the same way, and there's no doubt that it's a sport with far more three-dimensional elements than windsurfing! If you can freely control a kite, it offers far more enjoyable elements than windsurfing. At that time, I thought kitesurfing would continue to evolve. She, as an athlete and as a life's work, travels the world, constantly challenging herself with a wide range of new sports. She was the first Japanese woman to captivate Alaska with snowboarding from its early stages. I heard about this from my friend, snowboard photographer Tamotsu Takiguchi, at the time. Postscript: Around that time, I also received many requests to photograph snowboarding. I worked on collaborations with professional snowboarders and their vehicles at newly established halfpipes in Naeba and other locations, and also photographed snow-covered mountains at several ski resorts for a commercial for Toyota's newly released car (bb). I loaded my equipment into a Land Cruiser and drove over 2000 kilometers across Japan in a week. It's all fond memories now! After that, Wind-Cross and AIRZONE began airing.
