Bobby Fischer is argued to be one of the greatest chess players of all time. He earned the title of Grandmaster at the age of 15 years old, the youngest up to that point in history. He was the first US born player to hold the title of World Champion, and was influential enough in the chess scene to have an era defined after him. However, he was not always this renowned. On October 17th, 1956 at the Rosenwald Memorial Tournament at the Marshall Chess Club in New York City, Bobby Fischer was a 13-year-old boy sitting down against Donald Byrne, an International Master and one of the best American players at the time. This game of chess would showcase extraordinary combinational play and creativity from the 13-year-old Bobby Fischer. The game would later be dubbed “The Game of the Century,” and would catapult Fischer into the spotlight of the chess world at large. Connor Shafran composed Game of the Century in tribute to the legendary game between Fischer and Byrne. Game of the Century utilizes the exact moves Bobby Fischer vs. Donald Byrne used, but put into rhythm. The rhythms chosen coincide with the flow of the game, how long the players took to play the move, and the strategy behind each move in the actual game.
