#CairoTales The Blue Mosque The Mosque of Ibrahim Agha Mustahfizan, also known as the Mosque of Aqsunqur, the Blue Mosque, or the Mosque of Ibrahim Agha Mustahfizan, is a mosque built by Prince Aqsunqur al-Salari and located in Darb al-Ahmar, Bab al-Wazir Street. It was built in 747-748 AH (1346-1347 CE). It is called the Blue Mosque because of the magnificent collection of blue ceramic tiles that adorn the qibla wall and the tomb of Ibrahim Agha Mustahfizan. The mosque is 80 meters wide and 100 meters long. In the center of the mosque is an open courtyard surrounded by four columned arcades. The largest of these is the qibla arcade, which has two rows of arches, while the other three each have one. The mosque has three entrances: one on the western facade, one on the northern facade, and one on the eastern facade. A domed mausoleum is attached to the mosque. The front of the eastern arcade is covered with beautiful blue tilework. Prince Aqsunqur al-Nasiri, one of the Mamluks of al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun, was appointed to several positions, including commander of a hundred, commander of a thousand, and commander of the hunting party. The word "hunt party" is Persian, so the commander of the hunting party was the leader of the hunting party, a position known during the Abbasid era and common among the Seljuks, later adopted by the Mongols and Mamluks. The Blue Mosque is the jewel of the Darb al-Ahmar district's mosques. It has four names: the Mosque of Ibrahim Agha Mustahfizan, the Mosque of Aqsunqur al-Nasiri, the Mosque of Light (or Vision), and the Blue Mosque, by which it is most commonly known among the locals. It was built by Prince Aqsunqur al-Nasiri, one of the Mamluks. It contains three tombs: The tomb of Prince Ala' al-Din Kujuk (Mamluk era) The tomb of Ibrahim Agha Mustahfizan (Ottoman era) The tomb of Prince Aqsunqur al-Nasiri The threshold of its entrance is made of ancient Egyptian stones, chosen for their durability and strength. Did you know that the pulpit of the Blue Mosque (also known as the Mosque of Aqsunqur al-Nasiri, Ibrahim Agha Mustahfizan, or the Mosque of Vision) is the oldest marble pulpit in Islamic Egypt, dating back to 747-748 AH / 1346-1347 CE?
