The Missing Piece in Dog Training Nobody Talks About

In this episode of A Dog’s View, I’m talking about something that has become a huge part of my work: behavioral diversity and why it matters for our dogs. Dogs need more than obedience. They need safe opportunities to sniff, search, chew, explore, rest, move, observe, make choices, and express natural dog behaviors. When we only look at behavior as something to stop or correct, we can miss what the dog is trying to communicate. But when we understand behavior as information, we can start asking better questions: What does this dog need? What is too much? What is missing? What would help this dog feel safer, calmer, and more fulfilled? This is why I have become so dedicated to learning more about Family Dog Mediation, L.E.G.S.®, Total Welfare, and behavioral diversity. Dogs are individuals, and they deserve to be understood as whole beings — not just judged by whether they are “behaving.” Welfare before expectation. Clarity before correction. Behavior is information.
