If you are planning to live and work in Australia, two of the most common employer-sponsored visa options are the 482 visa and the 186 visa via the Direct Entry stream. First, a key requirement for both visas is that you must have an Australian employer to sponsor or nominate you. If you are currently overseas, finding a sponsor may seem challenging, but thousands of skilled workers successfully do this every year. Understanding the 186 Visa – Direct Entry Stream The 186 visa through the direct entry stream is a permanent residency visa. If you meet the criteria and your application is approved, you become an Australian permanent resident from day one. Key requirements for the 186 visa direct entry include: Your occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), which includes over 450 eligible occupations such as Registered Nurse, Civil Engineer, Chef, ICT Business Analyst, Agricultural Technician, and Lift Mechanic. You must complete a full skills assessment by the relevant assessing authority for your occupation. You need at least three years of full-time work experience in your nominated occupation. You must demonstrate competent English (IELTS 6.0 in each band or equivalent). You must be under 45 years of age at the time of application (with limited exceptions). If you are a recent graduate or your experience is not formally documented, you may not meet these requirements. In that case, the 482 visa may be a more realistic starting point. Understanding the 482 Visa – Temporary Skill Shortage The Temporary Skill Shortage 482 visa, also referred to as the core skills stream, is a temporary visa that allows skilled workers to live and work in Australia for up to four years. Here are the key features of the 482 visa: Your occupation must also be on the Core Skills Occupation List. In most cases, a skills assessment is not required, unless you are in a trade occupation or applying under specific job titles such as Program or Project Administrator. You need only one year of relevant work experience within the last five years. English requirements are lower (IELTS 5.0 overall with no minimum in each band or equivalent). There is no age limit for the 482 visa. The 482 visa is often more accessible for skilled workers who may not meet the strict requirements of the 186 visa. It allows you to enter the workforce in Australia and build up experience. Can You Transition from the 482 Visa to Permanent Residency? Yes. After holding a 482 visa for at least two years with the same employer, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through the 186 visa via the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream. What If You Are Over 45 or Your Occupation Is Not on the Core Skills List?
