Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome: Ben's Story
Ben was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a severe heart defect, before he was born, and was 3 days old when he had the first of three open heart surgeries at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. For more: http://heart.chop.edu Pediatric heart surgeon Stephanie Fuller, MD, performed all of Ben's surgeries, altering the circulation system so Ben's heart functions as a one-sided pump. This is called Fontan circulation. The surgeries are life saving for children with single ventricle heart defects such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS).
