Putting begins even before you reach the green! Reading the slope of the green is essential to successfully putting in fewer strokes. However, there's a chance you won't be able to read the green accurately once you're on the green. Before you reach the green, start by getting a sense of the shape of the fairway from the fairway's landing. First, determine whether there's a difference in elevation to the left or right. Once you're on the green, check with your own eyes that the difference in elevation was correct. Next, look at the slope from the ball side to the pin to read the slice and hook lines. They will either curve to the right or left. Next, look from the pin side to the ball side to check that the slice and hook lines are correct. Even beginners can read the green accurately just by checking these two points: high/low and slice/hook.
