This flute concerto in D minor is clouded in mystery. Not much is known of its origins and also the composer remains anonymous. Fortunately, this piece has been preserved in a collective manuscript owned by the Swedish organist and composer Heinrich Christoph Engelhart (1694-1765). Even without extensive provenance, the quality of this music speaks for itself. The concerto opens with a slow, homorhythmic introduction by the strings and the basso continuo and this will maintain their synchronized rhythm throughout the melancholic movement. The traverso gets introduced in a rather modest way, fitting with the rhythmic simplicity of the accompaniment. The musical acrobatics start in the Allegro movement that follows with many rapid passages and effectful embellishments. The slow, third movement is a dialogue between the traverso and the basso continuo. The concerto wraps up with a lively Allegro, showcasing the cherished ritornello form of the era. The energetic motives and some strategically chosen passages of rhythmic dissonance give this movement its frisky character.
