Imprisoned by the Nazis, while his wife was sent to a concentration camp, Franz Heep had a turbulent life before emigrating to Brazil in 1947. But he was one of the wizards of São Paulo architecture. From his drawing board flourished the Edifício Itália, the Hotel Jaraguá, the Church of São Domingos, the luxury residential buildings Lausanne, Lugano Locarno, Ouro Preto and Ouro Verde, and many towers of small apartments, such as Arlinda, Normandie, Arapuã, Icaraí, Araraúnas, Guaporé, Maracanã, Marajó and Iporanga. For eight years, he was a professor at the Mackenzie School of Architecture. Until his death in 1978, he continued to work in Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, and Santos. There is much to learn from him, especially regarding compact apartment housing complexes. With his Bauhaus masters, Heep learned to expand and optimize the space of small apartments.
