YELLOWSTONE – Exploring the GRAND LOOP ROAD from Yellowstone Canyon to Mammoth Hot Springs | 4K

The Grand Loop Road at Yellowstone National Park is a 142-mile figure-eight scenic highway. We spent the day driving and exploring the Upper Loop from the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone to Mammoth Hot Springs. Artist Point is perched on the south rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. It was our first stop of the day and features a stunning panoramic view of the 308-foot Lower Falls. The Lower Falls plunge into the deep, colorful V-shaped canyon. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is 20 miles long and up to 1200 feet deep. We also stopped at the Upper Falls, which thunders over a 109-foot cliff. The distance between the Upper and Lower Falls at Yellowstone is just a quarter of a mile, but because the Yellowstone River bends sharply between the two falls, it is impossible to see both from the same overlook. We continued driving north on the Grand Loop Road over Dunraven Pass. Dunraven Pass is the highest pass in Yellowstone National Park at 8,917 feet above sea level. During our visit in mid-July, the wildflowers on the mountains were in full bloom and gorgeous. We also drove up Chittenden Road, which is a scenic 1.3-mile unpaved service road which leads to a parking lot for the trailhead of the North Mount Washburn trail. We next stopped at Tower Fall which plunges 132 feet and is in the northeast quadrant of Yellowstone National Park. First photographed in 1871 by William Henry Jackson of the Hayden Expedition, Tower Fall is a stunning display of erosion through volcanic rock. We continued driving and made our way from Tower Fall over to Mammoth Hot Springs. Mammoth Hot Springs is a geo-thermal area in Yellowstone National Park, known for its cascading chalk white travertine terraces. The terraces at Mammoth are ever-changing, as the flow of available water changes. Yellowstone Park headquarters are located at Mammoth Hot Springs as well as several amenities for visitors. Yellowstone National Park was established on March 1, 1872, and is the first national park created in the United States. Its establishment stemmed from the documented accounts of unique geothermal features and diverse wildlife.
