In 371 BCE, Sparta's hegemony in Greece was shattered at the Battle of Leuctra. The Thebans, commanded by the brilliant tactician Epaminondas, dealt a fatal blow to Sparta's domination, which had lasted since 404 BCE. The Theban general employed a maneuver at Leuctra that will ensure his immortality in all military history textbooks.
