The Sinking of the RMS Republic
In 1909 the White Star Liner RMS Republic collided with the SS Florida, while outbound from New York to Gibraltar. Famed maritime writer James B. Connolly was on board, and he went to great lengths to publish his account of the accident, despite the efforts of the White Star Line to stop him. The RMS Republic sank off the coast of Nantucket, although almost all the passengers and crew evacuated safely. The ship was equipped with a Marconi wireless set, and its distress call was the first ever to be used for a successful rescue at sea. The ship was rumored to be carrying millions of dollars of gold, silver, and other valuables but its treasures have never been found.
