The Nisyros/Kos caldera complex is one of the most threatening in the entire Mediterranean. The main caldera is located on Nisyros, where it is a tourist attraction and has made the soil extremely fertile over the millennia. The island has three natural spas that attract a small number of tourists each year. The main activities are fishing and tourism, and the active caldera, with a huge lava reservoir nearly three kilometers below the surface, causes spectacular mini-eruptions. The caldera is only 1.5 kilometers from the island's main town, but the entire caldera complex extends all the way to Kos, one of Greece's major tourist attractions. The volcano is extremely active and continues to emit gases. If it were to explode, the Nisyros/Kos volcanic complex would wipe out the Aegean islands with a massive tsunami. The Eastern Aegean volcanic chain stretches along the adduction line between the Asian and African continents and has destroyed more than one Mediterranean civilization.
