FORGOTTEN GIANTS And The Secret History of Experimental Flying Aircraft | Aviation Oddities

This is the story of an audacious dream, a dream of flying aircraft carriers—colossal motherships that could carry their own fighter escorts or bomber payloads across continents and oceans. In the desperate crucible of World War II and the high-stakes chess match of the Cold War, engineers in both Germany and the United States pursued this incredible vision, leading to some of the most ambitious and dangerous experimental aircraft ever to leave the drawing board. The concept of a "skycarrier" was not born in a vacuum. As early as the 1920s, British and American airship programs experimented with launching and recovering biplanes from rigid airships like the R33 and the USS Akron. But these were fragile behemoths, vulnerable and slow. The true impetus for the heavily armed, fixed-wing flying aircraft carrier came with the strategic realities of World War II. For the German Luftwaffe, the challenge was range. How could they strike targets deep within enemy territory, far beyond the reach of their conventional bombers and fighters? For the United States Army Air Forces, the problem was reversed but no less critical: how could they protect their massive, long-range bomber formations, like the B-29 Superfortress, on their perilous 10-hour missions over Japan or, later, deep into the Soviet Union? The fighter aircraft of the day simply didn't have the fuel capacity to escort the bombers all the way to the target and back. The solution, conceived on both sides of the Atlantic, was as elegant as it was terrifyingly complex: if the fighter can't fly to the fight, then carry the fighter to the fight. This single idea sparked a technological race to create a viable parasite aircraft system—a smaller combat plane that would be carried, launched, and even recovered by a much larger mothership. The ultimate expression of the German parasite concept was tied to the infamous Amerika Bomber project—a strategic initiative to develop a bomber capable of striking New York City from bases in France or the Azores. One of the most ambitious proposals for this mission involved a true skycarrier: the Junkers Ju 290Z Zwilling (Twin). The Ju 290 was a large, four-engine maritime patrol and transport aircraft. The Zwilling concept proposed taking two of these massive planes and joining them together at the wing, creating a single, gargantuan aircraft with eight engines and a central fifth engine. This monstrous creation would have a wingspan of over 60 meters. Its purpose was not to drop bombs itself, but to act as a transport and launch platform for a smaller, high-speed parasite bomber. The most likely candidate for this parasite was the Messerschmitt Me 328, a pulsejet-powered aircraft envisioned in various roles, including as a bomber. The plan was terrifyingly simple: the Ju 290Z Zwilling would fly from Europe, carrying the bomb-laden Me 328 across the Atlantic. Once within range of the American East Coast, it would release the parasite bomber, which would then use its own engines to dash towards its target—Manhattan—and release its payload.
