HOMETOWN HYPE: Rhode Island - Alternative boards and point breaks in the Ocean State

Rhode Island’s surf culture splits into two distinct worlds. There’s Newport — synonymous with Sid Abruzzi and the Water Brothers — where shortboards, high-performance lines, and decades of core heritage define the scene. And then there’s South County, which has always been more of a place for longboards and alternative surf crafts. Director TJ Thran gives us a glimpse into South County’s tight-knit community to explore what makes this stretch of coastline so special. As Thran puts it: “Like with any surf town that has that core local crew that’s there toughing it out seven months out of the year when it’s cold and gnarly, we just want everyone to come with respect and respect the landmarks, if you’re shooting photos or videos, and respect the people if you’re surfing. They’ll absolutely open their arms and hearts and doors and dinner tables to you, if you show up with respect.” It's is a story about waves, yes — but even more about the people who shape the lineup all year long. Directed by TJ Thran. Hometown Hype celebrates local surf communities across the country and is proudly supported by our friends at White Claw.
