India responded with Operation Sindoor and suspended the Indus Water Treaty. Just months later, the announcement of the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 match caused a huge backlash. People questioned how India could play cricket with a country that shelters terrorists. Hashtags like #BoycottIndiaVsPakistan and #NoCricketWithTerrorState went viral. One of the strongest voices came from Aishanya Dwivedi, widow of Pahalgam victim Shubham Dwivedi, who appealed for a boycott. Despite protests, the Asian Cricket Council confirmed the match would be played in the UAE. Tickets did not sell out, and the stadium was almost empty — a clear sign of public anger. India defeated Pakistan easily, but the match was filled with controversy. There was no handshake at the toss or after the game. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav dedicated the win to the Pahalgam victims and Indian armed forces, saying some things in life are bigger than sportsmanship. The Pakistan Cricket Board filed a protest with the ACC and ICC, calling India’s conduct against the “spirit of the game.” PCB even threatened to pull out of the tournament unless match referee Andy Pycroft was removed.
