The sewn dhow represents the purest and most ancestral form of dhow. These vessels have undergone very few changes over the centuries, and today they are still built using modern techniques, nails, motors, etc. They sail throughout the Middle East and on the Nile River. They are considered a fundamental part of the cultural heritage and maritime history of several countries, primarily on the Arabian Peninsula, such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, the rest of the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Yemen. They are also common in Zanzibar and India. These vessels dominated trade in the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean. They were used for coastal navigation and fishing and were essential for Arab merchants traveling the Maritime Silk Road. If you'd like to see how a sewn and assembled ship is built using timbers, the kind that were constructed in the 6th and 7th centuries, join me on this wonderful and exciting project. This project has required me to gather a great deal of information on the archaeology of sewn shipwrecks. It's a great challenge for me, as it's the first time I've ventured into something like this. I have no reference points, as I've never seen a sewn ship made before. In this project, you'll see how it's built from the keel to the end of the ship. This ship is handcrafted, based on the plans of a modern dhow. I've had to modify some parts to create a sewn dhow from the 6th and 7th centuries. I've modified the keel, frames, beams, etc., but I've respected the outer deck, the lines, and the shape of the ship, which have remained very similar for centuries. The pieces are handmade.
