Almost everyone who comes here drives up to the monasteries and leaves the same afternoon. That is what tourists miss. After the buses go, the centre fills up, the tavernas and cafes spill onto the pavements, and the rocks glow above the rooftops in the last of the light. This particular evening had two things running at once. It was Psychosabbaton, the Soul Saturday before Pentecost, one of the biggest weekends in the Greek Orthodox calendar. It was also the night of the Champions League final, PSG against Arsenal, and every screen in town was showing it.
