Raga Hamsadhwani on the Shehnai I Ustad Ali Ahmed Hussain I Live at BCMF 2012

#bengalclassicalmusicfestival ┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉ Ustad Ali Ahmed Hussain Khan of Allahabad, the acknowledged shehnai specialist was born in Calcutta on March 21, 1939. His grand-father late Ustad Wazir Ali Khan was the first to demonstrate Indian classical music on shehnai at Buckingham Palace, London. His father the late Ustad Ali Jan Khan and uncles Ustad Nazir Hussain Khan and Ustad Imdad Hussain Khan of Benares were also renowned shehnai specialists. Ali Ahmed presents shehnai in a soft, subtle and sweet tone enriched with melodious patterns. The purity of raags in his performances is a hallmark of his steadfastness to tradition. He taught shehnai at Sangeet Research Academy, Calcutta since 1974.Ustad Ali Ahmed Hussain Khan holds the distinction of composing the signature tune for Indian Television, along with Pandit Ravi Shankar. His recordings are numerous and under variety of labels. Ali Ahmed travelled and performs extensively in India and abroad. He passed away on March 16, 2016. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Ustad Ali Ahmed Hussain Khan kicked off the festival with a shehnai performance set on Raga Hansadhwani. Hansadhwani, belonging to thaat Bilawal, represents all 'shuddha swar' (pure notes). Hussain's performance produced perfect 'gamak' (profound waves of melody) coupled with 'taan'. Two shehnai artistes Hassan Haider Khan and Ahmed Abbas Khan accompanied Hussain during the performance. Renowned tabla artiste Pandit Samar Saha embellished the performance with several tabla 'lahora', 'rela' and 'laggi'. The Foundation introduced the Classical Music Festival back in 2012. It all began with an idea. Abul Khair, the Chair of Bengal Foundation, wondered whether something as complex as classical music could reach the hearts of the average audience through the right presentation. He envisioned an event where classical music would be presented in a large-scale festive ambience open for all, dispelling its elitist image. The Festival was launched with the conviction that an annual classical music event would revive the Bengali heritage and enrich popular taste in music. Exposure to the unfathomable depth of classical music is a humbling, yet enriching experience. Immersion into its acute sensibility awakens our spirit, fostering humane values and compassion. The Foundation’s experience from the last six years has led the Foundation to believe that popular taste in classical music has been rising; the audience has not only stood out in numbers, but their capacity to appreciate and concentrate in the subtleties of classical music has also broadened.
