Since then, technology has significantly contributed to improving the performance of this intervention, and thus total knee arthroplasty has become one of the most successful procedures. What it is, who are eligible candidates, and how the intervention is performed, explained to us by Dr. Răzvan Dragomir, primary physician in orthopedics and traumatology at the SANADOR Clinical Hospital. What is total knee arthroplasty and when is it indicated? “As you mentioned, it has been more than 50 years since this surgical intervention has been in our therapeutic arsenal. In itself, this surgical intervention means replacing the diseased joint with a set of components that we call the total knee prosthesis, components that actually somehow replace the abnormal shape and anatomy of the affected knee. Total knee arthroplasty or total knee prosthesis is indicated in advanced forms of gonarthrosis, when conservative non-surgical solutions are out of date and when the patient can no longer control the pain with any alternative treatment measure, and the quality of life decreases greatly.
